United States Coast Guard Auxiliary

As an Auxiliarist, you have an opportunity to increase your knowledge of boating safety and acquire special training through advanced classes, by taking courses and tests on line or correspondence courses from the Coast Guard Institute.  Instruction in Navigation, Meteorology, Marine Engines, Seamanship, Boating Safety, Air Operations, Communications, and Search and Rescue operations enhances the value of you to the Auxiliary while adding to your own personal knowledge base and enhancing boating pleasure.

You will find great personal satisfaction in providing a valuable public service to boaters and the general public. The possibility of saving lives is always in your path as an Auxiliarist.

Dedication to boating safety provides you with the atmosphere for getting together to exchange boating experiences and participate in exercises, group outings, training, etc. You'll find unique fellowship among Auxiliarists that's unique. There is time to relax and have fun at Auxiliary outings, rendezvous, cruises and conferences. Auxiliarists make lasting, meaningful friendships.


Auxiliarists are entitled to the following benefits:

  • Entitled to receive current copy of certain Auxiliary publications and the NAVIGATOR at government expense
  • Attend all Auxiliary National, District, Division, and Flotilla meetings, training sessions and social events.
  • May vote on any Flotilla matter
  • Be carried on the District membership roles and receive an Auxiliary membership photo identification card.
  • May wear an Auxiliary Uniform with proper devices and insignia of the current of highest past office held.
  • Eligible for any elected/appointed office for which qualified
  • Be eligible to receive CG orders and be assigned to duty
  • Entitled to fly the Auxiliary Ensign on a currently inspected vessel facility
  • Entitled to CG and advanced training
  • Entitled to use CG (not Department of Defense) Exchanges for purchases of goods and services except alcohol and cigarettes.
  • Entitled to use Department of Defense Exchanges of uniform items only.
  • Be authorized by proper authority to use government vehicles to perform official business
  • Access to the CG's Mutual Assistance program, which provides low interest loans for emergencies and student loans.
  • May use private vehicles for authorized Auxiliary activities without CG orders including, but not limited to, routine travel t/from authorized activities, participation in parades (while towing boat or float), chart updating missions and environmental activities.
